Alison Spence
Principal, Kohia Terrace School
I have had the privilege of leading Kohia Terrace School for 19 years. This full primary of 400 5 to 13 year olds is in the heart of Auckland and attracts students from a multitude of cultures.
In 2017 I was awarded a six-month Auckland Primary Principal Association travelling fellowship. The international perspectives gained were presented at a Growth Coaching symposium in 2018. I also presented at the online symposium in 2020 about coaching and connecting communities. Two podcasts have been published with GCI; one on student coaching and the other on our coaching journey. It is clear I am passionate about coaching.
I have engaged in a variety of coaching professional learning and development programmes over the years and became an accredited coach in 2019. Coaching is a key aspect of the way we do things at KTS. Our leadership team are all trained coaches and approach professional conversations from this mindset as much as possible.
At the beginning of 2022 I completed the Impact Coaching programme after two leaders had undertaken this learning in 2021. As a result, all members of our leadership team now are trained facilitators in Impact Coaching.
