Overview
This two-day professional learning programme is designed for teachers who understand the principles of Structured Literacy and are ready to bring them to life in their classrooms. The focus is on practical strategies that move beyond knowledge into everyday practice, ensuring older students gain the tools they need for comprehension and success across the curriculum.
What You'll Learn
Deepen their Structured Literacy toolkit
- Explore and integrate key components: morphology, etymology, chunking, mnemonics, phonology, and orthography.
- Understand how these elements combine to support vocabulary growth, fluency, and comprehension.
Apply strategies for Years 5–8 learners
- Learn how to teach older students to decode, break down, and analyse words using advanced literacy strategies.
- Strengthen students’ ability to apply strategies across texts in science, social studies, mathematics, and other curriculum areas.
Focus on comprehension and meaning-making
- Move from word-level understanding to true comprehension.
- Build strategies that enable students to monitor their own understanding, make connections, and draw conclusions across complex texts.
Bring theory into practice
- Link structured literacy knowledge to the NZ Curriculum.
- Design lessons that embed structured literacy approaches into daily teaching and across subject areas.
- Reflect on practice and plan next steps for embedding literacy schoolwide.
